EV Charging Estimator
Estimated energy needed
38.86 kWh
57 kWh usable (95% of 60 kWh)
34.2 kWh for the charge itself
4.66 kWh lost to conversion inefficiency
Time: 1h 46m
Total capacity: 60 kWh, usable: 95% = 57 kWh used for calculations.
Charger efficiency for ac-l2: 88% below 80% and drops progressively above it: 84% at 80–90% SOC, 84% at 90–95% SOC, 84% above 95% SOC. Charging slows at high SOC to protect battery health, which increases relative losses.
Since charging stays below 80%, the standard efficiency applies:
kWh = (80 - 20) x 57 / 0.88 = 38.86 kWh
Total loss: 4.66 kWh (12.0% of total). Real-world losses vary with temperature, battery age, and charger condition.
Estimate how much energy your EV needs to charge between two battery levels, accounting for real-world charging losses.
- Enter your current (start) and target (end) battery percentage
- Enter your vehicle's total battery capacity in kWh (from the spec sheet)
- Adjust the usable % if needed (default 95% — check your vehicle's actual usable capacity)
- Select your charger type (AC or DC)
- Optionally add electricity rate and charging power for cost and time estimates
Why is charging above 80% less efficient?
Above 80% SOC, the battery management system slows charging to protect the cells. This means more time drawing power for auxiliary systems (cooling, BMS) relative to energy stored, reducing overall efficiency.
What is "usable" battery capacity?
Manufacturers often advertise the total (gross) battery capacity, but the BMS reserves a buffer at both ends to protect cell health. The usable capacity is typically 90-95% of total. For example, a car advertised as 82 kWh may only let you use 75 kWh. Use the usable capacity for accurate estimates.
How accurate is this estimate?
This provides a reasonable estimate based on typical charger efficiencies. Real-world results vary based on temperature, battery health, charger condition, and specific vehicle behavior.
